No day but today...
Nov. 29th, 2005 12:41 amAnd then there was RENT.
And Maya remembered a part of who she used to be. And who it might be good to be again.
I am so, so blessed to be where I am in life, and to waste so much of my time in worry and fear is a disservice to those who put me here and those who may not have the chance.
On the way home I was contemplating where I found out about RENT.
I know that while I've listened to the soundtrack hundreds of times, I've only seen the show once. And I had the cds before that... then I remembered.
See back in the day there was a Little Maya, and she loved Girl Scout Camp. One year, her unit, being older girls got the chance to put on a special performance at the closing campfire. One of the counselors had an awesome song... and it was called "Seasons of Love."
When Little Maya got home, she went straight to the allmighty but somewhat mysterious internet and found that the song was from RENT. And soon she bought the soundtrack used from the local cd shop.
She spent that whole summer loving, listening to, and memorizing the soundtrack. It was to serve her well when she moved to Colorado for High School and eventually met Dinah and
felessan... who took her to see the show.
and also I realized something... when I was younger, I always thought of my sister like Maureen. Heck, she even did the Cyberland performance in front of one of her classes way back when... but now I think maybe, we should have seen Mimi all along. I just hope she can find a Roger... or even just an Angel.
Needless to say, I was very pleased with this rendition of the show. While some of it was over the top, it was so powerful and so beautiful that I can't bring myself to be really upset about the little omissions. You have to remember that I first learned the story from the songs alone, with the little notes in the lyric book... so if things were condensed, it wasn't too hard for me to adjust. The costumes and scenery were spectacular.
I'm sorry that Corina had been spoiled for certain parts, and that Jess just seemed generally unhappy toward the end. I hope people are ok, and better and... stuff.
So very much love to all the people I got to see tonight. You all rock, and I miss you guys that are so far away. I send you long-distance hugs!
