Ranty rant... and fluff
Nov. 5th, 2003 11:26 amSo, I realized soemthing kinda scary a few days ago, and am still contemplating it:
On monday, I found out that had they not gotten enough donations to cover thier broadcast fees, Japan-A-Radio would have shut down on November 1st. This scared me.
Japan-A-Radio is a 24-hour, live-streaming, 128kbps (some internet rasion is at 96) internet radion station that plays exclusively Jpop and Anime music (more the former). They keep up with current new singles, play a huge variety of music (the most popular songs repeat no more than twice a day from what I've heard), and have less than one commercial an hour (and then only for useful things like Environmental protction or the Girl Scouts).
I listen to Japan-A-Radio, literally 9-14 hours a week. It keeps me sane and focued at work, it gives me access to music that I simply couldn't hear in America without it. It saves me enourmous amounts of import costs and keeps me open-minded. It is totally free and avaliable on virtually any computer.
And how much donation are they asking of each listener to help keep them alive? $100 like NPR? No. $5 a month like LJ? No. They're asking for just $5. $10 if you can aford it. They're not threatening to make the station subscription-only. Just begging humbly for a little money.
So I've been wondering, how much is this worth to me? I feel absolutely obligated to donate now. What would I have done if they'd just been gone when I came into work on monday? What would I be doing now? At any rate, my current plan is to see if I can afford $20 after this next credit card bill. The sudden realization that if others hadn't been generous and responsible, I would have lost this amazing resource... it was scary.
Wow, that got long. Anyway... I have choir in a few minutes, and Dr. Ish just came by and told me how to turn up the heat in here. *dances* No more freezing to death for me!
Need speech draft, three songs and four journals for japanese.
Also, I have not one, not two, but FOUR things going on from 7-9 tommorow night.... *twitch*. And two tonight at the same time... *sigh* Goodbye life... I'll miss you. Come back soon, ok?
Bishonen: Chris (sneaky plan #2... in progress!) and Julious (because my hair looks like his today). ^_^
Bishojo: Michiru... just because Kimberly-san complemented our TB costumes today. ^_^
