Ooooh~
Ok Apple. Two years and three iPods later... you're really starting to win me over.
It's no secret that I've loved iTunes since the moment I downloaded it. The organizational structure and the multi-lingual indexing and searching are wonderful and the playlist system appealed to me, since I'd been making monthly playlists or CDs for many many years.
Mostly because of my adoration of iTunes, when I got an mp3 player, there was no question that it would be an iPod. Overall, the iPod has shown (or developed in subsequent generations) all the features that I want. I could say that I still wish for more function in the text reading vein, but I'm sure that the larger iPods or iPhones have more functionality that way. With the 3rd gen nano, I learned how to play with video in iTunes and even did some conversions of anime episodes and things.
The iTunes store never interested me much, it lacked the ability to let me download Japanese songs and there's not much in english music that I really want to pay money for.
[EDIT: Ok, I can now find: Gackt, Miyavi, Utada Hikaru, Hamasaki Ayumi and Amuro Namie (They only have two Koda Kumi songs, so she doesn't count). They still don't have: Orange Range, Home Made Kazoku, Kimeru, Kazuki, Arashi or Spitz. Maya is a sad kitten.]
Some of you have already heard me rant about how happy I was a couple of weeks ago to discover that most of NPR and APM programming is available as Podcasts. It meant that I learned to download podcasts and have been updating unheard episodes of several shows (TAL, News from Lake Wobegone and Speaking of Faith mostly) to my ipod.
So today, I got an email from the iTunes store... about this new feature in the iTunes store: iTunes U. There are hundreds of video and audio lessons and lectures available, on a TON of subjects. And everything I've found so far is free! There aren't any/many high-level Japanese classes yet, but there is a whole hour long lecture of Koizumi's policies as Prime Minister, so I'm sure there's more interesting stuff out there that I just need to dig out of the lists. ^_^
So, long story short. I love Apple and iTunes, and once I'm finished listening to these two Linguistics lectures, I think I'll listen to last weeks 'This American Life'.
[Edit Edit: I'm building a shopping list. Sweet Honey albums: "Still On the Journey", "Breaths", "Feel Something Drawing Me On" (mostly just for Waters of Babylon), "Live at Carnegie Hall" (for Denko and Wade in the Water), "Experience 101" is the newest... and I kind of want it too.]
