Foretting
And then I sat and did a lot of nasty money maths...
And then I realized that I had completely forgotten about pippin. Now, that, to me, is one of the worst things I could possibly do, Pippin is an irrevocable part of me... to the point that forgetting about it in favor of everyday boring things seems almost sacrilegious. So here goes. It's pretty long...
We arrived just after "Corner of the Sky", so I can't comment on the opening of the show. (*sad*)
Charlemagne's court- shiny, and very similar to ours (get ready to see that a lot), they had the "welcome Home" song of Pippin trying to have problems and Charles ignoring him. Which has always been a bit painful for me.
"War is a Science" - choreography very similar to PHS, better props. I can't fault them for doing the old version, but the music is not as good as in the revised. This was the first time I began to hope their Charlemagne would enunciate a little better (it might have just been bad lyrics). Pippin was shiny and cute. The rotating curtains for entrances was really freaking cool.
"Glory" - Their leading player was shiny. The first thing that came to my mind was Columbia from RHPS. However, she should have put more effort into being... well... the LP. She seemed very worried about keeping her voice strong and forcing the low notes (which seemed out of place with her much stronger highs), and lost alot of her control and power to that worry. She was an amazing meso-soprano/alto 1, but she should have moved more of the songs up into her range. Of course, I also don't like the original music and lyric order for "Glory" as much as the revised... And, I missed "Magic to Do", so their LP might have been stronger there...
Battle and The Head - I liked the body moving separately as the head talked, that was /cool/... Similar props to ours, fun sets - that goes for the whole show.
"Simple Joys" - Ok, I know that the orchestration in the original is pretty weak, but their LP really failed in this one if you ask me... I think maybe she just lacked the stage-owning presence that I expect... again, I think she was sort of afraid her voice would fail... though this song is mostly in a perfectly good meso range... Also, a lack of correct enunciation and emphasis really degrades this song because it's very fast. Also, her ending didn't have the carefree la-la-la feel to it...
"Just No Time At All" - Bertha was cool. Bertha could sing. Bertha was lecherous and shiny and cool. The song was great. I liked the added orchestration, it helped. I liked the set and the dancing... I liked that the entire balcony turned around and stared at us for singing the chorus when she told us to... we were loud. This was the first time I cried.
"With You" - "Fresh fruit right off the.... women" *grin* Yay sex. Pippin was adorable, the girls were good... I'm not overly fond of the song outside of for the irony. Still, well done.
Sex Montage - Whoohoo... shiny, and good, and well choreographed, and just... wow. Freaking amazing. I really can't tell you how much I loved this montage, it was just cool. Very Fosse choreography.
"Spread a Little Sunshine" - I miss the French of the revised, but their Frastrada was cool. I didn't think she was that much like Kat Muller, but everyone else did... Their Lewis wasn't as flamboyant as PHS's, but there's something to be said for big dumb warriors that don't /quite/ prance that much...
Politicking "Morning Glow" - pretty cool. I really liked the monks. I liked the giant crosses on poles that changed the stage into a church, I liked the lanterns, and I liked their Pippin... It was good.
-Intermission at end of morning glow-
Pippin's court... meh, hard to change anything, pretty much the same old thing.
"On the Right Track" - Ok, this was probably their LPs best number... and she still lacked a certain control. Pippin followed her, but she didn't /make/ him follow. Still, very cute, well choreographed. Expression. This is a great song anyway, and they did it well.
"Kind of Woman" - Catherine kicked ass. The bubbles and dancers were adorable. I love this song. She did under-emphasize the "...one terrible mistake" line. But, that may have been a stylistic thing.
Theo - must be one of the coolest little kids ever. ^_^ Very cute, very sweet, yet still very much a boy.
"Extraordinary" - This song is my father in a box. I agree and don't agree at the same time... anyway, good, Pippin... odd emphasis on things, but whatever. Really cute, well sung. Crying #3.
Sex part 2 - Heh. Cute. As always. But shiny. I wish the man had been more center-stage.
"Love Song" - This song is so much more painful that I remember it being. Infact, everything with Katherine was. This was absolutely adorable, perfectly choreographed, sweet, and lovely.
"I Guess I'll Miss the Man" - Ok. This song... is all my feelings of late in a box. Well, all my feelings on the obvious topic. I cried. I cried a lot (#4).
"Finale" - Four words: gaping pit of flame. The players and LP did not seem as organized and coherent as I could have wished... this was not a heavily choreographed number (if I remember right) and I missed the fire rings. ^_^ But, you know... Of course, this wasn't the revised, but for some reason, the LP didn't win me, I was almost with pippin. Almost, some of the players really wanted it, but the LP didn't seem to care, it was play anger... or something. They did clear the stage pretty well. They had techies! More than 2! Though that dramatic clearing really killed any chance for a curtain call or for a reprise of Magic to Do which I was hoping for. They did kill the music, which the original script didn't say. At the last minute (in the appeal to the audience) the LP did shine, she was right, she needed us, she seemed to look right at me... but then the moment was broken... and that was the end... which wasn't nearly as powerful as I think the Magic to Do reprise would have been.
I was in shock after the show. I missed Phil, I couldn't believe I'd never hear him sing again... I couldn't believe I'd never get to see Pippin again... I couldn't listen to people talking about it anymore, I couldn't stop thinking that maybe Pippin was what made me decide to go into CS (It was about that time I gave up on my dreams and settled from practicality (which CS seemed to be at the time)).
I felt sick and broke. My neck was throbbing, I could barely stand. I wanted to cry. I wanted to go back, I wanted to see it again... and then today, I forgot. Literally forgot. You could have said "Maya, how was it?" and I would have said "How was what?"
So, there's the rant. Now I think I'm dead, and I feel sick again. I hope I can make it to class in the morning. Hell, I hope I can /move/ in the morning, my neck fails to cooperate.
Bishounen: Phil/LP, Muraki, Mikage (link /those/ three in you head and you end up like me...)
